Believe it or not! You may have a trace of cocaine or heroin on your fingertips even if you have never used the drugs. But don’t worry, it is all related to your environment. Follow to know more about this subject.
Why some people have traces of cocaine or heroin on their fingertips?
It does not relate to if you addict these drugs or not. According to a new study, there are about 13% of participants have cocaine or heroin on their fingertips Although they have never used these drugs. They found the presence of these traces is caused by environmental factors as banknotes.
When drug dealers use banknotes, their hands leave a small amount of these drugs on their banknotes. So, when these banknotes reach you, your fingertips catch traces of these drugs.
You may think that is simple, but now scientists work on a test to identify people who don’t use drugs from those who do because it seems widespread.
One of the researchers said, “Believe it or not, cocaine is a very common environmental contaminant. It is well known that it is present on many banknotes. Even so, we were surprised that it was detected in so many of our fingerprint samples.”
They were surprised, when took the fingerprints of 50 participants who had never addict drugs, that more than 1 in 10 of them had small traces of cocaine in their fingertips. Although these amounts are very little, but it may cause problems for forensic examiners.
Dr. Bailey said, “The people we took samples from here at the university, so it is possible they knew others who were taking substances or had been in an environment where these substances were taken,”.
The results of the new study
As mentioned above, the researchers found more than 1 in 10 (of 50 participants) have a trace amount of cocaine on their fingertips.
They think that they can differentiate between those who addict these drugs from others who don’t. They say that people who really addict those drugs have a higher amount on their fingertips than others. This higher amount is caused by handling the drugs as well as the byproducts interfere their pores.
Bailey says, “By establishing a threshold for significance on a fingerprint test, we can give those tested the piece-of-mind of knowing that whatever the result of the test may be, it was not affected by their everyday activities or shaking hands with someone that had taken drugs,”.
Finally, there are more researches are needed to be applied in this field since it is a promising field in the future (especially for forensic examiners).
