17 recipes from the Egyptian cuisine: 8- Hawawshi

Our eighth recipe, Hawawshi or a meatloaf as a literal translation of this meal. This recipe is loved and favored by Egyptians.

It is for meat lovers. Economic, easy and tastes delicious. So, prepare yourself and write down this recipe in your own cook notebook.

First the ingredients:

If you are preparing a meal for two people, you will bring a half kilo of minced meat (beef). For more people increase the amount.

Bring one big onion and mince it in the food processor.
Bring meat spices (1 big spoon of it)
1 tsp of black pepper
1 tsp of paprika
1 ½ tsp of salt
2 round bread loaf with bran

How it is made:

You should mix the whole ingredients together well, then bring the bread loaf. The loaf may be left as one piece or cut into 4 quarters. Put in each quarter sufficient amount of meat, bring the other loaf and repeat the process again.

How it is cooked:

Heat the oven to 200 degrees and bring a big tray (round or rectangle) then spread it with some oil.
Put the quarters of bread in it, then spread some oil on top of each.

Leave it for 30 minutes to let the lower surface mature then flip it, to let the upper surface mature too.

You will notice that it took a crispy texture and light brown color. It is already mature. It takes from 1: 1 and half an hour to be cooked.

When cooked serve it with pickles and the green salad.


With ingredients, you could add small pieces of tomato or bell pepper (green or colored) or you may add hot pepper powder if you prefer.

If you prefer it a bit tender not crispy, you could put it in a pot and cover it for 20 minutes, and it will be ready to be eaten.
