Heat stroke occurs when we expose ourselves continuously to high temperatures, especially in the head, and we forget the importance of drinking liquids frequently, so we become dehydrated.
The people who are most affected by heatstroke are usually children and the elderly because their thermoregulation mechanism does not work completely well in the case of the elderly and in children is not yet fully developed.
Symptoms and signs of heat stroke
Symptoms and signs of heatstroke are usually dizziness because of low blood pressure, thirst, rapid pulse, heavy sweating, nausea and vomiting.
Sometimes people have headaches, rapid breathing, muscle cramps generated by the loss of salt and potassium due to excessive perspiration.
On the other hand, people with heat stroke may have disorientation or confusion and even suffer fainting or loss of consciousness.
Other characteristic signs of insulation are:
• Blush in the cheek area and forehead.
• Red face and very hot.
• High fevers.
• Headache: Severe headache, especially in the frontal area.
• Alteration of the conscience.
• Impossibility to concentrate or think clearly.
• Blurry vision.
• Spatial confusion.
• Muscle cramps.
• Be intense.
• Extreme fatigue.
• Excessive sweating.
How to avoid heat stroke
Mainly, you should avoid constant exposure to the sun, especially during midday and early afternoon because it is the time when the sun reaches its highest point and the heat is more intense.
It is recommended to use light, loose clothing and preferably in light colors.
The use of sunglasses and caps is suggested, although it is always better to use a wide-brimmed hat because it gives shade on the face and neck.
Drink water frequently and especially if you do physical exercises under extreme conditions. In the latter case it is good to eat every 15 minutes of exercise made at least 200cc of water or isotonic drinks to recover the minerals that have been lost through sweating.
If you must travel on roads always remember to bring water, it is suggested to avoid the intake of alcoholic beverages and expose yourself to the sun because alcohol promotes body dehydration.
A very common mistake is to wet your head and then cover it with a wet cap. This action reduces the body’s ability to remove heat from the head and further promotes heat stroke.
How to act in case of sunstroke?
It is recommended to move the affected person to a place of shade preferably ventilated and fresh.
Place the affected person in a semi-sitting position with the neck in extension to improve breathing and air intake.
Wet the head a little.
Apply compresses or cloths wet with cold water on the forehead and nape of the affected person to regulate body temperature.
Hydrate it, but it should be given to drink small sips of fresh water. Under no circumstances allow him to drink a lot of water at once.
After controlling the sunstroke, it is suggested that the affected person be transferred to a clinic or to emergencies to be followed up.
